Artist's Statement
I wield a heat gun when I paint. Encaustic, hot beeswax painting, was used by the ancient Egyptians and Greeks and is now experiencing a return to favor by contemporary artists. The colored pigments are dissolved within a melted wax medium and applied in layers, which are then fused by heat to the under-lying layers. The process is slow and labor intensive, yet I love the richness of colors, textures and versatility that can be achieved with the medium.
Encaustic description: The Greeks and Egyptians used the process of colored wax to decorate during the fourth and fifth centuries B.C. The Egyptains used encaustic to paint the portraits of the deceased on their mummy cases. Since they still exist, it attests to the longevity of the medium, one that has returned to favor with contemporary artists.
