Always seeking new ways to create awareness in our community, its history and culture, Cottonwood is preparing to host their first juried art show to honor our military. The military in Colorado Springs shares a noble presence dating back to 1942. Art holds the capacity to reflect aspects of history on a personal human level. As a community Cottonwood hopes to continue to reach-out, invite, involve, and honor our military and their families. This show will feature the original artwork of regional artists, students, cadets, service members, as well as selected historical pieces on loan from Peterson Air Force Base, the Air Force Academy and Fort Carson. Opening Friday, May 28th from 5:00 pm – 8:30pm, “Tribute” will be located in the C. B. Herbertson Gallery on the first floor at Cottonwood Center for the Arts, and showing through June 17th.

"Glass in the Springs: 2010"
April 30, 2010
Glass: we're surrounded by it but generally look right through it. But there is a group of artists whose aim is to make glass more distracting, more beautiful, more noticeable.
Glass Artists of the Pikes Peak Region (GAPPR) will be hosting their 2nd annual glass exhibit entitled "Glass in the Springs: 2010" at Cottonwood Center for the Arts from April 30--May 21, with an opening reception on April 30 from 5-8 p.m. This juried show invites glass artists working in: glass jewelry, hot glass (including torchwork), warm glass (kiln-worked glass), cold-worked glass (including traditional stained glass work, etched, or painted glass), glass mosaic, and 3-D sculptural forms and home décor.
Last year's exhibit included over 30 artists from the Pikes Peak Region. This year's show promises a similar scope of work created by both amateur and professional artists. Judge's prizes will be awarded and votes will be taken for a People's Choice Award.
GAPPR is an association of glass artists/crafters organized for the purpose of perpetuating and encouraging glass art work, as well as educating and socially connecting glass artists/crafters in the pursuit of the business of glass crafting and artistry in the Pike's Peak region.
GAPPR is thrilled to be joining forces with Cottonwood Center for the Arts this year. Cottonwood Mission Statement is to provide quality art instruction; space for artists to create, exhibit, and sell their work; and an environment for a thriving arts community.

The Mizmar Madness Belly Dance Troupe will perform at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. There will also be stiltwalkers, a face painter and jester providing entertainment throughout the evening.
Mizmar Madness, founded in 2005, performs American Tribal Style Bellydance (ATS). This largely improvisational style of dance pulls its influence and inspiration from Middle Eastern dance and music while adding or combining global music, dance move styles, and costuming. ATS relies on all members of the group to interact together to create spontaneous art. While each performance differs from the next a common thread of structure and movement stylization emerges. We feel our dance is a creative expression of feminine beauty, joy, power, and happiness. Strengths surface, egos fade, we listen, we hear, and we share it all with you."
The Doumbekians will perform live drumming

"Art of a Nation"
February 26th, 2010 - March 17th, 2010
The 5th Congressional District and Cottonwood Center for the Arts hosts the 28th annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students grades 9 through 12. The theme for this year’s show is “Art of a Nation.” The Congressional Art Competition was created by Senator James Jeffors (VT) in 1982 while he was a member of the House of Representatives. Every year, Congressional offices across the nation initiate the Congressional Art Competition in their own home districts.
The works were selected from participating high schools in the 5th Congressional District. Professional artists from Cottonwood will select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each of the following categories: watercolor, oil & acrylics, drawings, computer-generated, photography, prints, and mixed media. A “Best of Show” award will be awarded to the student whose work of art displays not only excellent principles of art and elements of design, but also originality, and that extra something that touches the audience. The “Best of Show” art work will be sent to Washington, D.C. to be exhibited in the U.S. Capitol along with other award winning artwork from around the nation. The “Best of Show” winner will also receive a scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design, a $4,000 scholarship from Adduce Foundation, and three roundtrip tickets from Southwest.com to attend the official ribbon cutting celebration held in Washington, D.C..
A reception will be held Friday, February 26, 2010 at Cottonwood Center for the Arts, to recognize our young artists, their families, friends and art teachers. All entrants will receive a certificate of participation signed by Congressman Lamborn. Cottonwood Center for the arts will display this show from February 26, 2010 to March 17, 2010.
